Senior Help Line – Ireland’s only help
line dedicated to older people

‘I feel very nervous today, I am glad you are there’
‘I have felt so alone since my husband died’
‘Senior Help Line is my life line, thank you for listening’

Some of the comments to Senior Help Line from the tens of thousands of calls we receive every year
from older people throughout Ireland. Many of these men and women live alone or feel alone. eir
concerns shine a spotlight on the often hidden lives that older people in Ireland can live in today.
People phone us because they are isolated, desolate, bereaved, in crisis, fearful, anxious or depressed.
Some phone looking for information about entitlements and other services, and some contact us to
share good news.
Senior Help Line is open every day of the year from 10 am to 10 pm, including Christmas Day, which
sadly can be one of our busiest days.

e service is a programme of ird Age, a national voluntary organisation committed to responding
positively to the challenges and opportunities of growing older and ageing in Ireland. ird Age has over
1,400 volunteers, mainly older people, working in our programmes throughout Ireland variously as
tutors, listeners, befrienders and advocates. Part of our mission is to help to keep older people engaged
and active in their communities, providing good role models for every generation, contributing to civic
society and bene ting their own health and well-being.
Senior Help Line volunteers are trained to listen, to respond empathetically and to help callers explore
their options if appropriate. Many people phone us as they work through a crisis. Some people phone
regularly and are supported in their daily lives. Some calls deal with serious issues such as suicidal
thoughts or elder abuse. Our volunteers are trained to respond e ectively to each caller.
Senior Help Line also advocates on behalf of callers – and the wider population of vulnerable older
people they represent – by publicising the issues raised, and by speaking up for older people in media,
to government and at policy-making fora.

You may know someone who would bene t from talking to us. We are there to
listen and to help. Our LoCall number is 1850 440 444. No landline calls costs
more than 30 cent and all calls are con dential.
