foreword
Dear Active
Retirement Members,
Hello and welcome to the first ever Active Peter Kavanagh
Retirement Ireland Annual! This publication
is a new venture for Active Retirement Ireland,
and is based on feedback from you, the
members. We aim to give you the best value
we can for your €10 affiliation fee, and this
Annual will hopefully be a useful resource for
your group over the coming year.
Active Retirement Ireland has come
a long way since the first Active
Retirement Association was founded
in Dun Laoghaire in South Dublin in 1978. You
can read about the history and current status
of your organisation later on in the Annual.
The important thing is never to forget that
this is your organisation. I am lucky enough
to be one of the seven staff members working
for this great movement, but with 24,500
members taking part in activities every week,
the organisation couldn’t continue without its
great volunteer ethos. We all owe everyone
who volunteers, be it at local, regional or
national level, a debt of thanks for keeping
the Active Retirement experience alive and
allowing countless others to join in and see
for themselves what makes Active Retirement
Ireland so great.
