70 lifeboats, enough for everyone on board but the
listing of the ship made launching them impossible,
with lifeboats flipping, tipping and swinging,
crushing people on deck. Captain Schwieger had 2
warheads left in his U20 and contemplated his next
move. But as he watched the ship sink and saw his
mission accomplished, Captain Schwieger ordered
the submarine to return to base.
16 minutes after impact, realising that the ship had
lost all power and control, Captain Turner knew that
nothing more could be done and at 2:28pm the
Lusitania disappeared into the sea.
Only 6 of 44 lifeboats were successfully launched.
Survivors clung to upturned lifeboats, swimming
through debris and bodies. Word of the sinking
reached land almost immediately but it took rescue
boats over 3 hours to arrive. 700 lives were saved
including Captain Turner who had been swept off
the bridge as the ship sank. 1,192 people died in
the Lusitania sinking, among them 128 Americans.
The Lusitania sinking had been a breach of interna-
tional laws and became a powerful symbol in the
drive to recruit Irish soldiers to the war effort. The
deaths of 128 Americans enraged public opinion
and provided Britain with a propaganda opportunity
to gain a valuable ally. Within weeks of this event,
Germany ceased it’s torpedo campaign but when it
resumed in 1917, USA immediately joined the war.
