The journey - coal miner’s community

worked : on/off, changing the channels, the sound, the
brightness... and finally he said to me: "You can explain it to
the other members of your family" and he left. I had become
the chief of the TV! The choice was simple between the
channels that were broadcast: RTB for Belgium and RTF for
France via the Lille transmitter. Colour appeared in 1971 and
was introduced on all transmitters in 1977.

I made my Holy Communion in 1963. I was 12 years old.

We went back to San Giovanni Lipioni several times. I don't
remember much about the 1959 trip, when I was 8. We went
back by train. I remember that next to the village square, on
the other side of the road, the municipality had started

laying the foundations for the new school. Other kids and
I often played football there.
On the other hand, I remember the 1963 trip very well. It
was an epic journey.

My father had bought his first car. With one of his friends
from the Rome region, they made the journey, to take the
whole family and my sister’s godmother , to San Giovanni

Lipioni. There were 8 of us in two cars: my father, his friend,
my mother, my grandfather, my grandmother, my sister, my
sister's godmother and me.
Going away for several weeks with 8 people, desperately
wanting to bring a few presents: the boot of the car was full
to the brim. The luggage rack overflowed all over the place.
