6.3 Observation – University studies
After a few years of professional life, I realized that the big
bosses were rarely engineers. This could be explained by the
fact that the engineers do not have - at the beginning -
knowledge of management.
In 1981, the "Université Libre de Bruxelles", ULB - opened
courses centres outside Brussels. Nivelles was chosen to
provide courses outside office hours in Computer Science
management & Human Sciences. This, organized in 4 years
of study, led to a degree.
After consultation with my wife, I registered there and
took the courses, with the IT part focusing on
"management", which allowed me to acquire a good
foundation in accounting and other business tools.
I took lessons 3 days a week from 6 to 10 p.m. and on
Saturdays from 8 to 12 p.m. I graduated from ULB in 1985.
I really wanted to complete my training as an industrial
engineer with a degree from ULB, but the challenge was
significant. Married with a 2-year-old girl and working full
time, taking on this additional burden made me hesitate
about the chances of success. For this reason, I had asked
my wife not to tell anyone about it, neither our family nor
our friends. Concretely, I have never asked the IRE for
leave to study although I was entitled to study hours, like
any other worker.
Degree in hand, we revealed it to family, friends, and me
at the IRE.
