Acknowledgements
Any insight and research is often the product of interactions and reflections
of many people. A great deal of people helped with the creation of this
book, in many different ways over many years, and I am very grateful to
all. First of all, I would like to thank my children Ana Helena and Tomislav
for their understanding and patience with my often preoccupied mind and
their forgiveness for evenings and weekends disrupted by this work. I would
also like to thank my late parents Helena and Vladimir for being wonderful
role models and instilling courage, integrity and persistence in me. I am very
grateful to many other special people who have touched my life in different
ways and helped me to keep going on my path. A special gratitude goes
to: Adeeb, Ahlya, Annetta, Arci, Bobi, Boris, Bozhena, Cathy, Chris, David,
Duska, Fran, Eileen, Gordana, Iman, Jack, Jasna, Jo, Katarina, Karen, Kristina,
Marianne, Mario, Mladen, Mirna, Neil, Paul, Roy, Sajda, Sally, Sasa, Shirley,

Many friends and colleagues have provided insights, encouragements and

the bottom of my heart. With apologies to anyone omitted from the list,
a special thank you goes to: Eleanor Davey- Corrigan for commissioning
this book; my book editor Tamsine O’Riordan for helping me to improve
