SEL Standard 2D.2a: Describe causes and consequences of conflicts.
                Discussion Starter
Teacher: Ask the students: What is conflict? Have you ever had a conflict? Choose one student to explain what
conflict means and give a verbal example of a conflict.
                Explicit Instruction (I Do)
Teacher: Read “Mike’s Conflict” aloud to the students. Then explain why Mike had a conflict and describe his
consequence on the graphic organizer. Model how to illustrate “Mike’s Conflict” while using the graphic novel
                template.
                Mike’s Conflict (Story)
Mike began making loud noises during social studies class. His teacher asked him to stop making the noise because it
was distracting the other students. Mike ignored his teacher’s request and continued making loud noises. As a result,
his teacher informed him that he has to serve detention after school for one day and called his mother to report his
                inappropriate behavior.
                Guided Instruction (We Do)
Teacher: Choose several students to read dierent parts of “Joshua’s Conflict” aloud. Instruct the students to
determine the cause/eect and conflict in the story. Instruct the students to complete the graphic novel template with
                information from “Joshua’s Conflict.”
                Joshua’s Conflict (Story)
On March 18, 2016, two fifth graders were involved in an argument during writing class. First, Joshua told his classmate
Naomi that another classmate Susan wanted to fight her. Joshua also kicked Naomi’s leg. Naomi became angry and
told their teacher, Ms. Jones, what Joshua said to her. Naomi also told Ms. Jones that Joshua kicked her.
After Naomi told Ms. Jones about Joshua’s disrespectful behavior, he called Naomi a “snitch.” As a result, Ms. Jones
asked Joshua if the story was true, and he said, “yes.” Ms. Jones told Joshua it is unacceptable for him to kick someone,
and it is also unacceptable to gossip or spread rumors. Ms. Jones said the rumors could cause Naomi to dislike Susan
because Joshua had told Naomi a lie.
Ms. Jones also told Joshua that he should not start conflict. As a result, Joshua became angry and replied, “I hate this
school.” In conclusion, Ms. Jones assigned Joshua two days of detention and scheduled a parent/teacher conference
                with Joshua’s mother.
                Independent Practice (You Do)
Teacher: Assign the students to cooperative groups. Instruct the students to determine the cause/eect of one
person’s personal conflict in each group. Ask the students to complete the graphic novel template with the information
                from the person’s conflict.
                Exit Ticket (Assessment)
Teacher: Instruct each student to determine the cause/eect of a personal conflict. Ask the students to complete the
graphic novel template with the information from their personal conflict.
                                                                                                                          23
