     Donald’s Dilemma
After recess Donald came into the classroom looking upset. Later, Donald’s classmates told
their teacher, Ms. Jones, that David had called Donald “fat,” hit him when leaving school, and
told everyone that Donald “stinks.” Ms. Jones remembered that Donald’s mother had called
her and said that Donald wanted to transfer to a dierent school. As a result, Ms. Jones
asked Donald why he wanted to go to a new school. Donald did not answer the question.
When Ms. Jones asked Donald why he hadn’t told her about David’s nasty comments, he
began to cry and said, “I didn’t want David to get in trouble.” Ms. Jones said, “Donald, you do
not respect yourself because you are allowing David to do and say cruel and untrue things to
you.” Ms. Jones added, “no one has the right to bully you or anyone else.”
Donald replied by saying, “but I want to have friends.”
Ms. Jones said, “anyone who treats you badly isn’t a friend. You need to respect yourself
and not allow David to disrespect you.”
