"Through language, we connect; through literature, we understand. Together, they
teach us empathy, wisdom, and the beauty of the human spirit." Noam Chomsky
The Languages Department at Balata College has had an inspiring and eventful year, with
notable progress in promoting linguistic skills and fostering a passion for languages
among students. This year has been filled with various activities and competitions aimed
at enhancing reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills in English, and Vosa Vakaviti.
Our English curriculum focused on strengthening literacy skills and encouraging
creativity and critical thinking. Students were active participants in essay writing
competitions, debates, and speech contests at both intra- and inter-school levels.
A highlight of the Department was the successful completion of the Languages
Department Week and the Library Week Celebration, where students displayed
remarkable talents such as Debate, Oratory, Essay writing, Poem writing and Recital. In
addition, the introduction of Special Reading Time (SET) has provided a platform for
students to explore a variety of literature, from classic novels to contemporary short
stories, deepening their love for reading.
The iTaukei Language Program continues to thrive with traditional song and storytelling
competitions, helping students to connect more deeply with their cultural roots.
Moving forward, the Languages Department plans to introduce Language Clubs for
English, Hindi, and iTaukei, providing students with more opportunities for language
exploration and creative expression. We are grateful to all the students, teachers, and
parents for their commitment and hard work in making the Languages Department a
vibrant and successful part of Balata College.
