     HURRICANE FLORENCE
On September 14, 2018, Hurricane Florence made its way over the North Carolina coast. YMCA Camp Sea Gull and YMCA Camp Seafarer were hit hard. The storm caused significant waterfront erosion at Camp Sea Gull. At Camp Seafarer, the grounds were heavily flooded, particularly by the marina, and downed trees caused minor damage to the buildings. Piers at both sites, especially the upper wooden portions, required significant attention.
Despite the damage, Camp staff immediately started working closely with emergency management personnel to support surrounding counties. Seafarer housed 35–40 people working 16 hour days including tree specialists, linemen and kitchen crew.
Just days after the storm, nearly 40 YMCA staff members provided youth program support to families who were evacuated to shelters here in the Triangle. Y staff provided fun, games and programming for the children and gave parents some much-needed respite. YMCA Super Skippers Jump Rope Team provided shows and instruction at both shelters as well.
