MATHS
It’s been a busy year in the Maths Department! Mathematics Life Skills outcomes and content at St Edmund’s are integrated across a variety of school and community contexts, reflecting the needs, interests and abilities of each student. We’ve enjoyed developing the students’
mathematical thinking through activities relevant to independence, such as shopping in the community, buying lunch from the canteen, travel training and planning trips using online timetables, using EFTPOS cards, estimating and measuring distances around the school and relating time to everyday activities.
Excitingly, this year we also commenced Liberate units in Year 8 on the three substrands of Time, Patterns and Money. Students have been working independently in order to become proficient in each step, before progressing to the next level of thinking. In this new pedagogy, differentiated learning has been
emphasised, allowing the more capable students to progress, giving the teacher more time to spend with individuals or small groups. Furthermore, we have been preparing our students for the 21st Century by using a variety of ICT skills associated with their iPads and the computers by using the learning platform, Haiku.
