6 . 2 . 5 . NATIONALITY OF WOMEN ON EXECUTIVE BOARDS OF ITALIAN ORGANISATIONS
Almost 9 in 10 (89%) of women on executive boards of Italian organisations in SA were of Australian nationality (light blue, green, and brown in pie chart), almost 2 in 3 (63%) were of or have had Italian nationality (green, light blue, and orange), with almost half still of Italian nationality (either in isolation or dual with Australian nationality) and a very small number of ‘Other’ nationality (i.e. non-Australian and non-Italian nationality) (Figure 10).
When analysing the nationality of women in various roles of executive boards (Figure 11), it is interesting to notice that there were more presidents that had or have had Italian nationality than the average across all board roles (82% vs 63%), however fewer presidents than the average that are solely Australian (18% vs 34%). This is potentially an important factor, and it may suggest that Italian organisations tend to maintain their direct connection to Italian heritage through their president. That’s not to say that those with solely Australian nationality are not descendants
of Italians, but perhaps an even greater link
trend does not continue with vice presidents where half were of Australian nationality and half of dual nationality.
Conversely, more treasurers than the average were solely Australian (50% vs 34%) or naturalised Australians (21% vs 15%) and fewer were of dual nationality (29% vs 40%) with none being solely of Italian nationality (0% vs 8% average). This may be due to treasurers needing to understand the Australian financial system at a level that comes with being born in Australia or being in Australia for a longer period of time (note only one woman in the role of treasurer who was not born in Australia arrived in Australia within the past 5 years, Figure 13).
