IMAGE RECOGNITION
When uploading a marker, the platform creates an image recognition map based on all the detail and definition points in the image (lines, corners, contrasts etc.) and then uses this map of image recognition with the app. For a mobile device to easily recognise a marker the following criteria need to be met.
The image must be easily recognisable. The more detail, definition, and contrast there is in an image the easier it is to recognise. Greyscale images and images with significant shading (undefined lines & corners etc.) do not contain enough detail to create an adequate image recognition map.
The image must be unique. A marker image can only be in use in one campaign at a time (ie. two campaigns using the same marker image cannot deliver two different experiences as mobile devices will not “know” which experience belongs to the marker). Uploading a marker that is the same to another campaign and/or similar can cause conflict with the image recognition process, and in turn the delivery of the experience.
Lighting, reflection, and shadows. Lighting and reflection can play
a significant role in the image recognition process. From a lighting perspective, some mobile devices camera capabilities do not perform optimally in low light conditions. If setting up a campaign on a fixture check that there is sufficient lighting for a mobile device to easily recognise the marker. When it comes to reflection and shadows, mobile devices cannot differentiate between light reflection, shadows, and image definition, they simply “see” all these elements as a part of the image. When setting up a campaign do not use high gloss surfaces or surfaces that are known to shadow easily as these may make it difficult for mobile devices to recognise the marker.
