                         National Braille Challenge Competition

The annual Braille Challenge is a North American Braille literacy
competition designed to academically motivate visually impaired
students to become highly skilled in reading braille. It is sponsored by
the Braille Institute, a nonprofit organization for the blind located in
Southern California, with a mission to eliminate barriers to a fulfilling
life caused by blindness and severe sight loss. Student competitors
transcribe Braille using a Perkins Braillewriter device and are tested
on spelling, speed, accuracy, comprehension, and ability to decode
             charts and graphs in Braille.

This unique, two-stage contest, was created by the Braille Institute
in 2000 with just a handful of regional contests scattered throughout
