can be highly rewarding and one of the easiest ways to get bites. Whether I am throwing at boat docks, bridge
pilings, grass edges or other things, using a moving bait can generate a lot of bites.
Summertime brings about a whole other dynamic. Yes, the
weather and the water are warmer, but now you end up with
more company on the water along with fish that now need to
be patterned differently. Fishing is peaceful and great until
about say ten o’clock when the jet skis are out and the wake
board boats and water skiers are out. There also tend to be
reproducible patterns an angler can look for. If you have a
body of water with a lot of shallow cover and maybe some
grass, you can typically catch fish shallow all day long. I have
choices of several different kinds of top water baits to try and
attract fish into biting. An angler can also start looking at
deeper waters such as main lake points, or humps to target
fish. Fish will group up on drop offs, points, and pond dams
.
The fall of the year is when fish are starting to fatten up
for the winter. They follow the baitfish to the backs of
coves and pockets where they gorge themselves before
the winter months. Find the bait and find the fish. Lots
of moving bait opportunities in the fall. Crankbaits,
(lipless and lipped) are key tools, but so are swim baits,
spoons and blade baits are also good choices along with
swim jigs, jerkbaits, spinner baits and chatter baits.
For some of you, this information is just a reminder
while for others, there can be a lot of important details
to soak in. When I first stated fishing, I set a goal to
learn at least one new technique per year. Looking back,
I wish I had selected and set a limit on that goal. I sometimes find myself with too many choices. I wish I had
selected maybe a half dozen and learned how to do really well with those 6 or so techniques. Obviously you
have to take it all in an decide for yourself!
