Shriners Hospitals for Children
Open Announces 2020 Date
It was an epic Las Vegas PGA Tour event in 2019 when
Las Vegas resident Kevin Na won the Shriners Hospitals
for Children Open for the second time, joining three-time
Vegas champ Jim Furyk as the only multiple winners in the
tournament’s four-decade history.
The event used an earlier date (Oct. 3-6) than previous
years to attract one of the best fields in the tournament’s
history, and easily the best field in recent years. Among the
notables to play were world no. 1 Brooks Koepka, Bryson
DeChambeau, Tony Finau, Patrick Cantlay, fan favorite Phil
Mickelson, and Charley Hoffman, Ryan Moore and Adam
Scott led a strong contingent of players with strong ties to
Las Vegas and/or UNLV.
In 2020, the tournament is to be played at a similar time—
Oct. 8-11—and tournament officials hope for another stellar
year. Attendance jumped to 72,842 in 2019, up from 55,000
in 2018.
“We have to continue to evolve,” Shriners Open executive
director Patrick Lindsey said the day after the tournament.
“That will involve getting feedback from clients, volunteers
and spectators, then putting together the best plan to move
forward. Attracting great players will always be our No. 1
priority. … To see the mass of people come from holes 16 and
17 after Kevin and Patrick teed off on the 17th tee on Sunday
and fill up the hill overlooking 18 was very rewarding.”
