TIME TO STRAP ON YOUR
CROSS-COUNTRY SKIS
SOUTHERN OREGON NORDIC CLUB (SONC)
A glance at surrounding mountains and high hills will tell you win-
ter is here. It’s time to strap on your cross-country skis and take in
our region’s beauty. Where the Siskiyous meet the Cascades, skiers
are blessed with a ring of snow surrounding the Rogue Valley during
winter months. The normal ski season starts by early December and
sometimes as early as the first week of November. In partnership with
the BLM, SONC volunteers use a tracked Polaris ATV to pull a YTS
tracksetter and trail reconditioner to groom Hyatt Lake/Buck Prairie
Nordic System trails.
The Southern Oregon Nordic Club, snow permitting, offers weekly
Saturday outings with lessons for all skiing abilities. The Club’s general
meetings, November through April, are on the first Thursday of the
month, 7 – 8:30 p.m. at D&S Harley Davidson, 3846 South Pacific
Highway in Phoenix.
