viewed the Festival’s version of Richard II, which has special appeal
because of his long-time desire to direct the relatively little known
Shakespeare play. Ivory says his fascination with Richard results because
“all your feelings change about him” during the play.
Since receiving his Oscar and other honors, Ivory has focused on what’s
next, while also savoring the long-awaited and, many believe, overdue
honors. During the Academy Award ceremonies, Ivory stirred interest
with the dress shirt he wore underneath his suit—one featuring an
image of 22-year-old Timothee Chalamet, who was nominated for best
actor in Call Me. The shirt, created by artist Andrew Mania, “went viral.
They started manufacturing shirts,” Ivory laughs. “Most of the people
were more interested in the tuxedo shirt I was wearing than about me.”
And what about his Oscar. “He’s on the windowsill looking out,” Ivory
said of the gold statuette that’s perched at the window of his New York
City apartment. While other awards he’s collected over the decades of
his filmmaking career are in various locations, “This one I want to have
here. If feels good to be holding onto that Oscar. It’s mine.”
