PROVENANCE…

The beautiful building was designed by Huszagh & Hill Architects in 1925 and was constructed by
Avery Brundage, foremost architects and builder of the time. It is superbly located on the premier and
most prestigious Lake Shore Drive among the stately buildings facing Chicago’s beautiful Lake
Michigan. The building opened in 1926 as an upscale rental building and converted to a cooperative
        building in 1947.

        HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT EXTERIOR…

1540 North Lake Shore Drive is located in the Gold Coast National Historic District which is listed on
the National Register of Historic Places.

“This was the northernmost advance of the Lake Shore Drive phalanx of apartment buildings as they
marched inexorably toward North Avenue in Lincoln Park in the 1920s. While the 17-story red brick
and stone trimmed cooperative was replete with classical details, including a three-story rusticated
limestone base suggesting the Adam style, its steep slate roof and circular stone towers evoked a
French chateau. Typical floors contained two eight-room apartments although there were variations.”

Excerpt taken from Chicago Apartments: A Century of Lakefront Luxury written by Neil Harris.

Residence 16 North is indeed one of the variations described above. Not only is it a half floor
residence, but there is an exceptionally beautiful staircase leading to the Upper Floor with additional
En-Suite Bedrooms, Baths and a Media Room on the Upper Level, which was created during the
        extensive renovation of the apartment.

“Only 3.5% of Chicago’s pre-1940 buildings passed muster for listing on the Chicago Historic
Resources Survey. This massive undertaking by the city’s Landmarks Commission inventoried an
estimated half million buildings over a dozen years to better inform the landmark designation process.
1540 earned the second highest color rating denoting properties that possess some architectural feature
of historical association making them potentially significant in the contest of the surrounding
        community.

“The survey form notes an ‘unusual use of monumental architectural features at the top of the
building.’ These features include the towering hipped roof, one in which a quartet of sloping surfaces
connect like the seams of a hat to create a volume of space at the top of a building. The massive
checkerboard patterned chimney and two dormers accentuate the steep pitch of the roof.”

Excerpt taken from The History of 1540 North Lake Shore Drive Chicago, Illinois written by building
        shareholders.

1540 North Lake Shore Drive remains a top tier cooperative building and it is home to many high
profile, busy Chicagoans who desire a private, low key, intimate, prestigious service oriented building
to which they can retreat, relax and entertain while maintaining privacy, excellent service and
        amenities.
