very hard to get distance on something so pleasurable. Evolution is trying to get you to do its bidding. But how can you say that when it’s obviously also the most personal thing? How can you be coldly objective about your warm beloved? We shall see...
The same goes for the emotions of breaking up. Evolution wants you to be crushed because you have failed in its design to make you procreative. Letting
the negative emotions of a break-up or divorce pass through you without letting them control you is even a harder goal than letting mating pleasures pass through you. But once you get comfortable with the idea that lust, romance, attachment, and breakup are all covered by evolution’s plans, then you can see the emotions they cause as somewhat aliens, as invaders of our psyche from hundreds of thousand, even millions and billions of years of evolutionary history.
III. The fundamentalism that the relationship grass is greener on the other side of the hill.
Of course, much of this fundamentalism is due to
a highly sexualized America in which almost every advertisement is a chance to railroad the viewer with subtle or brazen sexual imagery.
