Perhaps it’s generally easier for women to fight
the urge to splurge with other men, or to find a new relationship. Evolution commands them to find help
in raising a child and so points towards the stable relationship. But today many single women have the financial resources to raise a child by themselves. Or alternatively, many divorcees didn’t plan on being
single mothers, but often with heroic effort, they have obtained the finances needed to do it. Nevertheless, one of the major evolutionary goals of women is to stay with one person, at least for four years Fisher talks about, and perhaps for a lifetime.
Men have somewhat the same impetus—that
of having a stable relationship to ensure that their offspring survive—but they are probably not as physically tied to the baby as women are. Once pregnant, a woman is no longer as physically free to follow the whims of her chemistry and imagination. Whereas a man is much more free to follow his urges and may even feel impelled by evolution to maximize the genetic diversity of his offspring by having as many sexual encounters as possible. Of course legally, this is not the case, with the biological father having as much responsibility as the mother.
