30 Advanced Romance*
the Buddhist way of saying ah, there’s that emotion. I can act on it or not. But probably not because I just felt that ten minutes ago with somebody else. And yesterday with the meter maid, and the day before that many times watching the Miss or Mr. America pageants.
In the case of fighting to stay in a relationship you can realize that your sex wiring is one way but your reason and overall desire for the path of your life is different. You still may not be able to control it, but at least you know it.
Maybe these temptation chemicals are not there
for almost everyone. Maybe Fisher’s approach is all wrong. Yet there’s still evolution to cope with. And even without the chemicals, the level of temptation in many modern societies is endlessly powerful. Movies, the media, bikinis, speedos, workplace intimacies, the number of single people due to the enormous divorce rate... the list is almost endless. These factors are constantly jerking our emotions around and stimulating the manufacture of new relationship chemicals in everyone.
So, it takes a powerful decision to counter them.
It takes a strong system of roots firmly planted in reality. The movie queen or king, the attractive single neighbor and the workplace beauty all can send you into spasms of possibility which must be countered with appreciation of what you have, and determination of keeping what you have.
