But birth control methods have been improving dramatically since the discovery of the pill, condoms, diaphragms, IUDs, morning after pills, etc. and the legalization of abortion. (Though the legality of abortion may change soon). No longer does sex have to mean babies.
And along with the freedom to have sex without babies, the ways in which you can have sex without being arrested have dramatically increased. This freedom starkly contrasts with earlier realities. Then life-long, monogamous, heterosexual, missionary-position sex
was the only choice not filled with horrible, social repercussions.Today the polymorphously perverse universe of behavior is commonly permitted, the legalization of gay marriage for most of U.S. seems inevitable, and casual sex hook-ups are frequent.
We’ve gone from a situation in which society almost completely defined our sexuality, to one in which each person defines their own sexuality—and sometimes defines it differently at different times.
These new freedoms have greatly strained the expression of love in America. But this is true probably because of the learning curve imposed by the new realities. But almost any approach would be better than the advice that many of us follow from randy musicians, rom-com movies, child-molesting priests, and positively prehistoric folkways.
