Some marriages nurture the amazing grace of a total union of wills, freely given, which consecrates each new day with fresh revelations of communication, contentment, and intellectual passion. If lucky it also stimulates lust that creates hot sex, limerance that gives giddy excitement to each day, and attachment which imbues the years with warm feelings and deep love
of another human being. And evolution helps these feelings with chemicals to stimulate lust, romance and attachment. And happy or not, almost 50% of all marriages remain wed-locked until one of the spouses dies. Although almost 60% of second marriages fail, most divorcees continue to marry until they stay married, happily or otherwise.37
And let’s also remember that somewhere on the human happiness spectrum we will bump up against the human condition ... those limits to happiness inherent in life itself. So that perhaps all the sex revolution of
the 1960s did was to try to get what never could be.
It mainly made a mess of what was already optimal happiness. I don’t believe so, but it is a great possibility.
The intensity of defense of life-long monogamy suggests there may be some internal drug that prevents people from considering alternatives to it. If there are drugs that promote lust, attachment and breaking up, then there could be a drug that prevents freethinking on certain subjects. No? Or, from the other angle, the refusal to consider alternatives, to deconstruct, or to
