So, it’s the very essence of ignorance to even try
to understand love. Also, many people don’t want the transcendence of love debased by it being explained scientifically. I agree with them. But I believe love, which is probably as old as the first Homo sapiens, or even
the first sexual reproduction between two multi-celled organisms—that is, hundreds of thousands to billions
of years old—is so strong that it can easily resist any destruction of its transcendence by a little investigation.
“Why do fools fall in love?” asked Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers. Almost everyone thought it rhetorical then. But now? As noted, the first step to finding out why is to name fundamentalisms that prevent us from seeing. Some of these are not nearly as true as they once were given the nearly 50% divorce rate, birth control and women’s rights. But to assume we’ve suddenly become immune to their power is to misunderstand the force of these fundamentalisms. They are:
