cause them to play fast and loose with the truth. In other words, their adherence to meaning becomes so strong that they compromise their desire to obtain accurate information — unless it supports their cause.
To some great degree, unquestioning support is necessary in order to generate sufficient enthusiasm for a candidate to win. But if everyone gives it, it also means an end to genuine information sharing.
I found this true in the 2016 Presidential race when I decided I had to vote for Sanders in the primary election, for Clinton in the general, yet liked Jill Stein the most. I didn’t vote for Stein because I thought she didn’t have a chance. But I refused to
get enthusiastic about any choice and regarded every liberal option — Clinton, Stein or Sanders — as fraught with major upsides and downsides. There were no right answers.
I think I was able to see all arguments more clearly and even developed some affection for some of monster Trump’s ideas — such as withdrawing from NATO, or withdrawing US troops from Japan, Germany and South Korea. For my trouble I was attacked from all sides of the political spectrum. Yet I do think people felt somewhat safe in talking to me knowing I would acknowledge the good reasons they had. And valuable information continued to be exchanged.
It became obvious that people were basing a huge amount of their meaning on their decisions, and so
