could not abide any contradiction. That and they were terrified at what some outcomes might lead to.
Nevertheless, without passionate enough meaning it’s hard to get up in the morning. Whereas if you have passionate meaning you’ll do almost anything to keep it.
So to stand outside this meaning compulsion is to be in one of the, if not the, most objective spots possible. Too see all of humanity’s many endeavors and beliefs as simply trying to find passionate meaning, whatever cockamamie or brilliant meaning it is. And to see it without judgment at least for a while.
Thus, being able to visit the perspective of meaninglessness in relation to even everything we hold holy, is to obtain at least temporary freedom from all those meanings. This doesn’t mean you can’t embrace the meaning all the more passionately after you’ve viewed it objectively. But it does mean that to be a thorough freethinker you need to be able to see all your meanings from a meaningless viewpoint, at least for a while.
If I were reckless I would have named this book The Power of Meaninglessness, but I believed that would be far too off-putting for most potential readers. The longing for meaning may be the first passion that drives all other passions, morals, friendships, and quests — not to mention the day-to-day hum drum meanings.
