Liberating Liberals
Moses commands: “Keep the Sabbath holy,” meaning to do no work or play or shopping on that day. A somewhat introspective day. You and God. Or how about an entirely “you” day? So, if you can afford it, money- and time- and nurturing-wise, have a day purely for your own mind. Gandhi had a day of silence. Of course if God exists she/he will be there too.
Do nothing that you feel you ought to do on that day. Do only what comes effortlessly. A totally selfish day to balance selflessness as an ideal. Assess the meanings you have on other days from this position of anonymous aloneness, but not loneliness. From a position of meaningless anonymity you can see much of the rest of the world with greater objectivity, from the freest possible point maybe.
Of course if you have young children such a day is almost impossible. Such is the glory and agony that is the powerful meaning of a child.
Still, by pursuing your extremely individual meanings, loneliness and lack of self-esteem can often be the result. Society hates those who do not conform. I found this true in the 2016 election when all sides felt I was an idiot for trying to pursue an independent course. Nietzsche experienced this to a great extent his whole life.
Yet some meanings are so powerful, so much a part of our sinew, that it’s hard to imagine that they could ever appear meaningless. These include beloved
