Module 8: LNG Vehicle Systems and Safety Practices
Lesson 8.4: LNG Vehicle Safety Practices
NGV Maintenance Facilities
Modified vs. ▪ Modified Facility
Unmodified o Designed or modified to allow safe maintenance or repair of natural gas vehicles
(CNG and LNG)
▪ Unmodified Facility
o Facility used primarily for gasoline/diesel vehicle repairs that has not been
modified to accommodate natural gas vehicles
▪ Heavier than air fuels that will pool on the ground
Any repairs or maintenance to LNG vehicles should be performed outdoors if a facility
is unmodified
General Safety ▪ Do not allow an LNG vehicle into a facility that has not been modified specifically for
Practices LNG and/or that does not have a working methane detection system
▪ Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as prescribed by manufacturer
▪ NEVER perform maintenance on a leaking vehicle
o Sparks from cordless electric tools can act as an ignition source and start a fire
Welding/Hot Work ▪ Vehicle must be defueled
▪ Always use welding blanket to protect LNG fuel system components when welding
on or around LNG vehicles
▪ Your company may require additional procedures, such as a fire watch
If You Detect an ▪ LNG is unodorized and cannot be detected by humans
LNG Leak ▪ NEVER bring a leaking LNG vehicle into the maintenance facility - Leave the vehicle
outdoors
▪ Identify the source of the leak
▪ Repair according to manufacturer’s procedures
