Class notebook and turn and talk to an elbow partner: “Why it is hard for the children of Xixuaú, Brazil, to go to school?”
• Tell udentsthattodaytheywillworkonansweringthe second que ion.
• Draw udents’attentionbacktothetextand read aloud Paragraph 3 on page 13 with minimal interruptions.
• Using a total participation technique, invite responses from the group:
“What is this paragraph mo ly about?” (It is about how they built a new school.)
• Reread the r two sentences on page 13.
• Ask:“What are some things you heard that the villagers brought into the village?”
(They brought in computers, the Internet, etc.)
• Inviteafewvolunteerstosharetheirthinking. • Tell the udents that the picture in the lower
right-hand corner shows something else the group brought in. Ask if anyone can identify the objects in the photo. Explain that the villagers also brought in something called solar panels. Invite udents to give a thumbs-up if they have heard of solar panels.
• Pointtothepictureofthesolarpanels.Explainthatthese are panels that soak up the sun’s energy and use it to make electricity.
• Invite udentstoThink-Pair-Share:
“What do we know about Xixuaú that might explain why they need solar panels?”
(There is no electricity in the village.)
