                                                     every word the professor says. You should only write

                                                     own the words that have the most meaning in the
                                                     lecture.




               Write down the most important words

                   3.  Read this transcript from a lecture on social psychology. Then look at one student’s note
                       from the lecture. Cross out the word in the lecture that are not in the notes. The first
                       sentence has been done for you.

                       Social psychology is the study of the way people behave, and how people feel about social
                       situations. So we will learn about what people think about other people and how they think
                       about society, . . . and how they behave together.

                                     - social situation

                              We: learn what people think about other people, how they think about society,
                              behave together
                      The words that are not important to the meaning of the professor’s ideas are usually in
                      these categories:

                      Pronouns: our, my, their, . . .             Preposition: in, on, at, . . .

                      Helping Verbs: be, have, do,  . . .         Conjunction: and, but, so, . . .

                      Determiners: a, the, this, . . .

                   4.  Read these sentences from a lecture on social psychology. Write down only the most
