Sentence Structure
The Writing Process
Outlining The best way to organize a paragraph is to make an outline before you begin
to write. An outline is like an architect's plan for a house. Imagine building a
house without a plan. The kitchen might be far away from the dining room,
or the house might have no windows. Having a plan not only helps you, the
writer, to organize your thoughts but it also ensures that you don't leave out
anything important.
In Lesson 1, you practiced making simple outlines, which look like this:
Simple Outline
Topic sentence
A. Supporting point
B. Supporting point
C. Supporting point
(etc.)
Concluding sentence
When you filled in the boxes in the diagrams on pages 46 and 50, you
were making outlines. Now learn a more formal way to do it.
A formal outline with details might look like this. Notice the system of
letters and numbers. Also notice that each group of letters (A, B, C) and
numbers (1, 2, 3) is indented.
