FEAR UNMA S KED

CDC, “Most facemasks do not effectively filter small
particles from the air and do not prevent leakage
around the edge of the mask when the user inhales.”
                                                                28
Facemasks are intended to be for people who
currently have COVID-19 and can help to prevent
others from catching the virus. However, they do not
prevent people from getting the virus. While I do
recommend caution when interacting with others,

the level and irrationality of the precautions being
taken is resulting in more fear than prevention. The
common flu killed 80,000 people from 2017-2018,
yet I don’t see people wearing all of this equipment
               during flu season. 29
When you take a look at the data and examine
who is actually at risk for the coronavirus, you

see a very clear picture. The coronavirus is most
dangerous for people who are sixty-five and older or
who have preexisting conditions. According to the
Center for Disease Control, “older adults and people
of any age who have serious underlying medical
conditions might be at higher risk for severe illness
from COVID-19.” They go on to list several high-
risk identifiers along with a list of the underlying
conditions that could put people at a higher risk. Here

is the actual list that is found on the CDC’s website. 30
Based on what we know now, those at high-risk
for severe illness from COVID-19 are:
