                  D. Prepositions: by + V -ing

By + V-ing tells how to do something. It answers the question. “How?”

(How did David learn to play the guitar?)

(How did Pierre find out the answer?)

A preposition must have a noun after it. The noun form of a verb is the V-ing form. When we
use V-ing as a noun, we call it a gerund. (To is different. To usually has the simple verb after it.)
