India carries the highest burden of
diabetes with escalating prevalence in both urban
and rural populations. India’s diabetes burden
has more than doubled between 1990 and 2016,
with the total number of cases going up from 26
million to 65 million. In rural areas, the
prevalence is approximately 3 per cent of the
total population. The population of India is now
more than 1000 million: this helps to give an idea
of the scale of the problem.
As India has become modernised, the
sedentary lifestyle favoured by western people
has infiltrated indian culture, leading to people
eating more and exercising less. Frequent
consumption of high-fat food like hamburgers,
fried chicken and colas leads to child obesity and
other health risks including diabetes. Creating
awareness is the need of the hour in curbing the
rising epidemic.
