Dextran is prepared from sucrose by the action of certain bacteria, Leuconostoc

mesenteroides. n Sucrose (Glucose )n + n Fructose.

Dextran is -1, 6-linked polyglucan. Its molecular weight is nearly 75,000

Uses: Dextran injections are used as plasma expander or substitute.
