Performance review refresh
MIL is committed to improving employee satisfaction levels and increasing retention through
both short and long term efforts, and one way we found to identify areas of interest and
importance to our team is through our Top Workplaces and Great Place to Work survey
responses. “It’s not just about the awards, which are important to recognize the amazing place
our employees make MIL, but more importantly this is about providing our employees a voice
to provide candid feedback on their experience working at MIL and to suggest ways to make
us stronger,” says MIL President Marisa Daley. Adding, “Improvements such as refining the
Job Architecture, introducing the Individual Development Plans (IDPs), and connecting MIL’s
Performance Reviews to the MIL Way and Job Architecture are examples of MIL leadership
listening and responding to your feedback.”
In the spirit of continuous improvement, in 2023 MIL conducted an update of our annual performance review form to tie The
MIL Way and leveling guides into the review process. The changes were enacted to further support employee career growth
and were met with mostly positive feedback. Some of the comments and suggestions from our team members sparked an effort
to make the form even better. In August 2024, we pulled together a focus group to analyze the feedback and further improve
the form. The group of a dozen or so team members were strategically selected to represent the many diverse voices within the
company. Coming together to collaborate on the improvements were staff new to MIL and some who have been with us for 20+
years. We also included supervisors and individual contributors, and exempt and non-exempt staff. The group of supervisors
included managers with a couple of direct reports to supervisors with 20+ direct reports. Both corporate support team members
were represented as well as individuals working on MIL contracts and billable on contracts. Finally, each of MIL’s different
sectors and business units also contributed staff to the panel to assure companywide representation.
The working group offered many varied opinions that informed the framework for a draft revised form, which was then
reviewed and further refined. The result of the team’s efforts is a form that addresses the employee needs expressed in the
initial feedback and subsequent focus group. Our hope is that the improved form will yield a beneficial experience for both
supervisors and our individual team members.
