“Alamat and Awitan” Highlight Buwan ng Wika in New York
Dubbed “Kwentuhang Pambata” or Children’s Story Time,
the Philippine Consulate General in New York’s celebration of
Buwan ng Wika was held on Saturday, 25 August 2018 at the
Kalayaan Hall of the Philippine Center. The event was attended by
about 30 Filipino-American children ages 3 to 12 years old.
Mr. Ramil Buenaventura, a teacher at the Renaissance
Charter School in New York and a Big Apple Teacher Excellence
Awardee of NYC Department of Education, read the storybook
“Alamat ng Palay,” as retold by Virgilio Almario in English and
Filipino. He also treated the children with a trivia about rice and its
legend.
The story-telling session was followed by singing lessons
from Chris Ignacio, Filipino-American song writer, actor, and
puppeteer. Chris shared Philippine folk songs such as Mambayu,
Magtanim ay Di Biro, and Filipino-American children trooped to the Philippine Center New York for
Bahay Kubo from the book the Philippine Consulate General’s Kwentuhang Pambata or Children’s

Vice Consul Khrystina Corpuz Popov and Cultural Officer Olivia Osias-Magpile
handed Certificates of attendance to the children who had a morning of fun and learning
about the Filipino language and the Philippine culture.
Also on hand during the event were the parents of the children of the Filipino
Community and Development Center in Ocean County based in Toms River, New
Jersey and Filipino International Community of America in Elizabeth, New Jersey.
Young Film Makers Take Center Stage at the 11th Sinehan sa Summer
The 2018 Edition of the Philippine Consulate’s Sinehan sa
Summer opened on 1 August 2018 with the screening of the Indie film
“Im Drunk I Love You” at the Kalayaan Hall of the Philippine Center.
“I’m Drunk I Love You”, the first full length film directed by JP
Habac and produced by TBA Studios, appealed to both the older and
younger audience. The romance comedy about a 7-year long unrequited
love of a girl with her best friend which was told simply and with hilarious
banter lightened up the mood of the viewers during the opening night.

of the Philippines, Cinemalaya and Victory Liner that shared their films
for free during the festival. He likewise thanked the audience for their
enthusiasm and support for the Filipino film industry.
The Sinehan sa Summer goes on every Wednesday of August and will
feature Film Master’s Highlight: Peque Gallaga, Indie Film and Short
Films from 15 to 29 August 2018. For the first time, it will have an
outdoor series edition in Connecticut, Jersey City and Philadelphia
showcasing the award-winning film, Heneral Luna.
