Carry a torch if travelling at night
Use Mobility Options to record start
and finish times (staff must sign
in and out of rostered shifts within
required timeframes using Mobility
Options, unless the Coordinator has
been notified of shift variations)
Notify your Coordinator if there are
concerns for your personal safety at
any time.
Working in Extreme Conditions
Working in extreme conditions such
as heatwaves or storms can be risky to
you and your customer.
These risks must be minimised and
may involve:
•
Changing the activities that are to
be undertaken during the service
(such as remaining indoors and
doing lighter tasks)
•
Your Coordinator rescheduling
services to another day or time of
day (such as when it is cooler or
when a storm has passed).
If extreme weather warnings are
issued, always follow the advice
of the regulatory authority. Never
travel through flood waters or fires,
and remain in touch with your
Coordinators if you are travelling to
customers and are delayed by road
blocks.
Storms
Storms can present additional risks
to Community Support Professionals
and customers, especially if travel/
transport or outdoor activities
are planned.
Wet weather increases the risk of
slips and falls, so be mindful and
take your time. It may sometimes
be necessary to change plans, so be
flexible and advise your Coordinator
of all changes.
Heat
Working in extreme heat increases
the risk of heat illness, symptoms
of which include dizziness, fainting,
rashes and fatigue.
Heat can also affect pre-existing
conditions. If you suffer from a
condition that may become worse in
extreme heat, notify your Coordinator
to discuss making alternative
arrangements.
During periods of hot weather, you
should always monitor customers as
well, to ensure they are not at risk of
dehydration or heat-related illnesses.
If you are working in extreme heat,
try to remain as cool as possible and
ensure your customers remain cool by:
•
•
•
•
Using fans or air conditioning if
available and closing curtains to
the sun while you are working in a
particular room
Minimising tasks that require
physical exertion (especially that of
the customer)
Staying hydrated with water
Ensuring protection from the sun
outdoors, using a hat, umbrella and
sunscreen.
If you are ever unsure, talk to your
Coordinator. If the heat is making you
or the customer feel unwell, call your
Coordinator immediately.
