George Walter Vincent Smith acquired this piece, together
with lot 2910, in 1910 from H.A. Lanthier, a dealer specialising
in rare oil paintings, curiosities and works of art based in
            Madison Square, New York.

Buddhism flourished during the Qing dynasty, and was
encouraged by the devotion of the Kangxi, Yongzheng
and Qianlong emperors. As a result of its popularity,
the production of Buddhist statuary, ritual objects,
vessels and other implements became widespread,
and a variety of materials were employed in their
manufacture including jade. Compare a smaller
celadon jade carving of Buddha (13.6 cm.) in the
Palace Museum Collection, illustrated in Zhongguo
yuqi quanji, vol. 6, Shijiazhuang, 1991, no. 334.
Another similar carving of a seated Buddha was
            sold at Christie’s Paris, 12 December 2019, lot 132.
