A COPPER ALLOY FIGURE OF BUDDHA This large and well-cast sculpture exemplifies the Kamphaeng Phet
THAILAND, KAMPHAENG PHET, CIRCA 15TH CENTURY style, with a particularly well-achieved philtrum that undulates and
27 1/2 in. (70 cm) high confidently defines the contours of his sweet and approachable smile.
Compare the aforementioned proportions of the head as well as the
typical three-layered flame finial (as opposed to four), abbreviated
$20,000 - 30,000 ‘fishtail’ lapel by the navel, and planar feet, to those of a Buddha from
Wat Phra That in the Kamphaeng Phet National Museum (Rooney,
泰國 甘烹碧府 約十五世紀 銅佛坐像 Ancient Sukhothai, Bangkok, 2008, p.211; and a head in the same,
p.51).
“Though [Kamphaeng Phet] was by this time part of the kingdom of
Ayudhya, many of its artists carried on the traditions of Sukhodaya Provenance
which had been handed down to them by their teachers. In The Estate of Mrs. Jane Rau, New York, acquired by 1971
most respects [the style] would be difficult to distinguish from the
contemporaneous work of Sukhodaya itself, through the shape of the
face, narrowing downwards markedly from the broad foreheads, is
said to be typical...”
