The rectangular seal is surmounted by a finial carved in the form of 《尚書·禹貢》中稱「海岱惟青州」。海即渤海,岱即泰山,「海岱高門第」意
phoenix with finely detailed feathers. The seal face is carved with a 指古青州地域內的名門望族。山東諸城注溝鎮逄戈莊村(今屬高密)為清代
five-character poetic inscription, Haidai gaomen di flanked by a pair of 體仁閣大學士、吏部尚書劉墉之故里。乾隆二十一年(1756年),劉墉到安徽
chilong below a two-character inscription yuci, ‘imperially bestowed’, 赴任前,乾隆皇帝召見劉墉,賜詩「海岱高門第,瀛洲新翰林」。

The inscription on the seal face can be translated as ‘Illustrious family of
the Haidai region’. Haidai is the ancient name of modern-day Shandong,
and also the hometown of the Qianlong-period scholar-official Liu Yong
(1719-1805). In 1756, Emperor Qianlong wrote a poem for Liu Yong, in
which this five-character inscription is mentioned.
