Each is carved from a length of bamboo, $2,000-3,000
with fve key holes on top and two fnger
holes on the bottom. One is incised with PROVENANCE
a couplet on making acquaintances and
gaining knowledge from reading; the other is Nicholas Grindley, London, 1998.

A DEHUA BAMBOO-FORM FLUTE
EARLY QING DYNASTY, 17TH CENTURY
The fute is shaped as a section of bamboo,
with a notch at the mouth end, a collar with
circular bosses at the other end, and fnger
holes in between. There is a knotted tie
through a hole at one end. The fute is stored
in three ftted boxes, the largest with an
inscription dated to the Meiji period.
