A POTTERY RITUAL WINE VESSEL, FANGHU
Eastern Zhou Dynasty
The faceted and waisted pear-shaped body raised on a square
pedestal foot encircled by a band of bosses, moulded around the
body with eight panels filled with phoenix patterns divided by pointed
flanges, rising to a tall square neck decorated with stylised hui
dragons, each side with an applied strap handle.

東周 灰陶虺龍紋方壺
The shape of the present wine vessel is comparable with its
contemporary bronze ritual wine vessels, see a mid Spring and
Autumn period ‘dragon’ fanghu, illustrated in Zhongguo qingtongqi
quanji, Beijing, 1998, no.23; compare also a related Warring States
period painted pottery hu, but with beast handles, in the Capital
Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Zhongguo taoci quanji, Shanghai, 2000,
vol.2, pl.189. See a further example of a bronze hu from the Robert
and Jean-Pierre Rousset collection, recently sold at Bonhams Paris,
25 October 2022, lot 8.
陶質,方唇折沿,直頸,四面黏燒穿環,面飾虺龍紋,頸部飾菱形紋
飾,肩腹一體出四棱,上下鳳八面,每面正中棱線突出成尖角,每面
飾虺龍紋,束腰,足四方。
此壺形制,腹若袋狀,四棱交叉凸起,同時期青銅器亦常見之。可比
較一件春秋中期龍紋方壺,見《中國青銅器全集》,北京,1998年,
編號23。更早相關實例則可參考Robert及Jean-Pierre Rousset舊藏一
件西周青銅壺,2022年10月25日售於巴黎邦瀚斯,拍品編號8。北京
首都博物館藏一件戰國雙獸耳彩繪陶壺與本件風格類似,惟頸部有獸
耳,而本件為四穿環,見《中國陶瓷全集》,上海,2000年,卷2,
編號189。
