Pu Quan, who used the name Songchuang, was a member of the
Qing imperial family. His father Zai Ying, and brothers Pu Jin, Pu Jian,
Pu Zuo were all competent painters. In 1928 he joined the Songfeng
Painting Association, and in 1936 he became a member of the
Chinese Painting Research Association, while he taught in the art
department of Fu Jen Catholic University. After 1949, he worked as a
researcher at the Central Research Institute of Culture and History, and
a painter at the Beijing Art Academy.

Although undated, this painting is likely to have been painted after
1949, when Pu Quan was a member of the Beijing Fine Art Academy.
At that time, Pu Quan painted many works that were in keeping with
the trends of the times, while incorporating the traditional style and
techniques of Chinese painting, such as this one.
