The successful integration of calligraphic text and image has been
a distinguishing feature of Chinese painting for nearly a millennium,
although Shi Lu’s approach is visually striking and boldly innovative.
Using Chinese characters together with letters from the Western
alphabet, the artist tightly enmeshes his words within the composition,
their forms arising from the contours and patterns of the very
landscape. According to Shi Lu’s inscriptions, the inspiration for each
leaf in this fabulous album is wide-ranging, from Song and Ming
dynasty painting, to Chinese literature, to the artist’s travels in Tibet,
           Egypt, Asia and North America.
