           A RARE AND LARGE PAINTED ENAMEL
           ‘EUROPEAN SUBJECT’ DOUBLE-SIDED
           SCREEN
           Qianlong, the zitan stand and frame, 19th
           century
           Exquisitely enamelled with an exotic scene
           of a European gentleman and lady carrying
           a spear and fan respectively, beneath a
           large tree and beside a table, looking at a
           boy striking a ‘fish-monster’ chime, all within
           a mountainous landscape with European-
           style buildings in the distance, the reverse
           with bamboo and a gnarled branch issuing
           pomegranates and blossoms, three birds
           perched on the branch, another in flight,
           further painted with a poetic inscription and
           two seals, all within a zitan frame and stand.
           Overall 62.6cm (24 5/8in) high. (2).

           紀紫檀座框

           The inscription on the screen reads: ‘高冠頻
           咲語紅霓朶掛枝’, which may be translated
           as: ‘The high and noble chattering and talking
           of the reflected rainbow, beneath flowers
           hanging from the branch’.

           During the Qianlong period, the southern port
           of Guangzhou was the main trade entrepot
           between Europe and China. Influenced by
           European painted enamels and oil paintings,
           local Cantonese craftsmen began producing
           a large number of painted enamel wares
           depicting foreign flowers, architecture and
           Western figures to be sent as tribute to the
           Imperial Court in Beijing; see Tributes from
