A RARE ARCHAIC BRONZE RITUAL VESSEL,
ZHI
Late Shang Dynasty
The compressed pear-shaped body of oval section
standing on a high oval foot, finely cast with a band
of confronted kui dragons divided by a central flange
on a leiwen ground, with a further band decorated
with similar designs around the foot, the bronze with
green malachite encrustation.

VESSEL, GU
Late Shang Dynasty
Of slender form rising to an elegantly flaring trumpet
neck, the middle section and spreading foot cast
with two taotie masks decorated with leiwen,
divided and separated by vertical notched flanges,
11 with a band of cicadas above the masks on the foot,
all reserved on leiwen grounds, cast with a Bing Wu
pictogram inside the foot, the greenish-grey patina
with malachite encrustation.
