Formerly in an Asian private collection, acquired in Hong Kong
on 6 March 1999
Sancai vessels in monkey form are extremely rare, and the current
piece is particularly charming with the additional splashes of precious
cobalt blue. Only one other example appears to be known, which is a
sancai and blue-glazed monkey, also modelled seated on a cylindrical
stool holding a wineskin decorated with foliate tendrils, formerly in
the collections of M. Komor and Georges deBatz respectively, later
sold at Christie’s New York, 30 November 1983, lot 319, for a price of
US$209,000.
The current motif of a monkey holding a wineskin appears to be a
whimsical adaptation from another type of sancai vessel depicting
foreigners holding wineskin flasks. Refer for example to a sancai
and cold-painted figure of a man, with foreign features such as large
rounded eyes, powerful nose and thick beard, crouching in a very
similar posture to the current monkey and holding a wineskin flask
of identical shape to the one in the current piece, from the Bryan
Collection. This piece is illustrated in Tang Sancai, Alliance Française
de Singapore, 2010, p. 24. Also see lot 3114 in the current sale for this
motif.
The result of Oxford Authentication thermoluminescence test no.
C207f5 (25 October 2007) is consistent with the dating of this lot.
