A RARE PAIR OF FAMILLE ROSE ‘FRUIT’ DISHES

YONGZHENG SIX-CHARACTER MARKS IN UNDERGLAZE BLUE

WITHIN DOUBLE CIRCLES AND OF THE PERIOD (1723-1735)

Each dish is finely potted with gently rounded sides rising from

a short foot ring and superbly enamelled in varying shades

including pink, green, brown, yellow, white and black. One dish

is decorated with three peaches growing on a gnarled branch, the

other with two pomelos opposite a falling blossom.

In China, peach is the symbol of extended long life through its
association with Shoulao, the Star God of Longevity, and also through
the association with the peaches of longevity grown in the orchard of
the Queen Mother of the West, whereas pomelo, with its pronunciation
similar to the word ‘to have’ (you), represents the wish ‘May you have
everything you need.’ While peach has been long used as an auspicious
motif on porcelain and other works of art, it is extremely rare to find
dishes or other vessels decorated with pomelo.

桃為五果之首，在神話與傳說中，桃子更是神仙享用的果實。若有幸得
嘗王母娘娘的蟠桃，食小桃則「成仙得道，體健身輕」，食大桃則能
「與天地齊壽，與日月同庚」。正因如此，桃子亦被稱為仙桃或壽桃。
而傳統信仰的福祿壽三星中象徵長生不老的壽星更手執一桃，印證桃子
在中國的特殊地位。而柚或柚子，因與「有」、「有子」及「佑」諧音，
則有「早生貴子」和保佑家人平安的美好寓意。
